How to get unstuck

A three-step framework for healing.

Many people carry trauma longer than they need to, because they apply the wrong remedy — one that works for a different kind of hurt. Identify · Implement · Increase.

Step 1 — Identify the kind of hurt you have
Step 1

Identify

You must identify the KIND of hurt you have, so you can address that type of hurt — and not something else.

Step 2 — Implement the right healing protocol
Step 2

Implement

Many people carry trauma longer than needed because they implement the wrong protocol. The wrong remedy works… for other issues.

Step 3 — Increase your strength and resiliency
Step 3

Increase

With the correct strategy in place, you'll increase your strength (capacity to withstand future pressure) and resiliency (ability to bounce back and heal faster).

What's unique about GY6

Three distinctives that make GY6 different.

Scripture. Science. Simplicity. All three working together, taking you to the space God intends for you.

01

Three parts of you, addressed

GY6 affirms three "parts" we need to address. Though each part impacts the others, the body, the soul, and the spirit are each unique. Many people don't distinguish between the soul and the spirit — which leads to much confusion. They each serve us in unique ways. They can each be injured in specific ways. And they must each be healed in their own way.

02

Healing happens two ways

Sometimes healing happens "instantly" (and looks like a miracle). Other times healing occurs "over time" (and looks like a lifestyle of health and wholeness). We see both in the New Testament. If a miracle occurs, we steward the blessing by "walking it out." If we walk it out intentionally, we often reap the same results — over time.

03

Scripture + science, simply

GY6 brings together the wisdom of Scripture and the gains of science, all working together to take you where God intends. And we communicate the concepts in simple-to-understand-and-apply ways. No PhD required.

I'm the facilitator and creator of GY6. That's my wife, Beth, who helps make all the magic happen.

I like to think I thrive at the intersection of Scripture, science, and simplicity — the three-pronged approach we walk through together. I created GY6 to equip first responders, veterans, and everyday heroes with resilience resources so they can overcome the hurts of PTSD and Moral Injury and more fully step into (or keep pursuing) their Kingdom purpose.

I've written and co-authored 30+ books, including 7 related to mental, emotional, and spiritual health. This one — it's my favorite of all of them, because of the impact I believe it can make.

I send a daily email devotional to more than 100,000 people every morning at 5am, I host a weekly podcast, and I teach in a variety of settings — from local workshops to churches to business groups to military bases. Whether coaching high-level leaders 1:1, equipping ministry leaders and nonprofit boards, or making complex ideas practical for other teachers and facilitators, I long to awaken people to the grace that saves and sustains them — so they can live out the significant call God has on their life.

What's in the book

Six chapters. Three parts. One framework.

The 150-page manual is organized into three sections, with two lessons per section — designed to be read in one sitting, or worked through over time.

Part 1

Total Health

Body, Soul, & Spirit

We discuss the importance of total wholeness — and how we must heal the kind of hurt we have. We affirm that each part of us matters — body, soul, and spirit. And we'll only be as strong as the weakest part, since each "part" impacts the others.

Part 2

PTSD

A Soul Hurt

PTSD is a response to external threats and primarily impacts our emotions. We discuss what triggers are, why emotional disruptions occur, and how to read the present for what it is — instead of always interpreting it in light of the past.

Part 3

Moral Injury

A Spirit Wound

Moral Injury is a response to internal threats and primarily impacts our beliefs about what we've done, failed to do, or had done to us. Moral Injury appears more prevalent than PTSD — and seems to drive the suicide rate among heroes.

PTSD vs. Moral Injury

Heal the hurt you have.

Many people confuse PTSD and Moral Injury — they think they (or someone they love) has one when they actually have the other. The remedy for one isn't the remedy for the other. Here's the key distinction.

A Soul Hurt

PTSD comes from "out there"

A response to something OUTSIDE of you

A sight, sound, smell, taste, or texture might "trigger" a reaction when you read the present in light of past experiences. Symptoms — fight, flight, freeze, fawn — tend to diminish over time, especially as we do the work.

The soul is your mind & thoughts, your will & desires, your emotions & feelings. When the soul is injured, it shows up as hyper-vigilance and reading present circumstances through past chaos.

A Spirit Hurt

Moral Injury comes from "in here"

A response to something INSIDE of you

A past event that marked you and makes you feel guilt and/or shame — based on what you did, failed to do, or had done to you. Symptoms tend to escalate. The longer guilt and shame linger, the more lethal they become.

The spirit is the seat of conscience & conviction — the part of you connected to God. When the spirit is hurt, it shows up as guilt ("I did something wrong") and shame ("I am something wrong").

Mending heart — PTSD vs. Moral Injury common symptoms

Anger · anxiety · depression · insomnia · nightmares · self-medication · withdrawal — these often accompany BOTH. The presenting symptoms look the same. The source — and the remedy — is different.

  • ✝️ Scripturally sound
  • 🧬 Scientifically accurate
  • ⚙️ Simple to understand and apply

He has studied, written, and taught about total wholeness (body, soul, and spirit) for two decades. He's interviewed hundreds of veterans, active service members, and family members about their personal trauma — warriors who served from WWII through the wars in the Middle East. He's talked with numerous clinicians, psychologists, and other medical personnel in both military and non-military settings. He's also worked in addiction/recovery, prison re-entry, homeless ministry, and human trafficking.
